Pakistan: Mango industry receives shelf life advice Agriculture experts have issued guidelines for mango growers and exporters with a view to increasing shelf life. In a press release issued by the media liaison unit of Punjab agriculture department on Monday, experts said that growers could decide when to harvest mango by assessing such things as shoulder growth, sugar content and shape in accordance with the variety. Mango is ready for harvest when its shoulders are fully grown, the shape is fulfilled and the sugar content reaches 10-12 degrees for local trade and 8-10 degrees for export. Harvesting, the experts advise, should be carried out in the morning, following which the fruit should be placed in the shade and containers should hold no more than 15kg of fruit, to avoid damage to mangoes at the bottom. Fruit should then be washed with cold water to lower temperature and remove soil and fungi spores. The mango should be packed in 2 to 5 kg card boxes after washing with cold water and application of anti-fungus treatments.
