Pakistan government to shift 267 steel mills out of city residential areas - 18 Aug 2013 Daily Times reported that the provincial government assured the Punjab Assembly that it was fully equipped to shift all 267 steel mills existing in the residential areas of Lahore to the Sundar Industrial Estate. Punjab Minister for Industries Mr Chaudhry Shafique said that the government had purchased 50 acres piece of land at the SIE to accommodate all the mills within the next four months. He said that notices had been served on the mill owners concerned. The minister for industries was answering different queries about the steel mills and other industries functioning inside residential areas of the city during the question hour in the Punjab Assembly session on Friday August 16th 2013. The assembly session started one hour and 15 minutes late from its scheduled time of 9 am under the chair of Speaker Mr Rana Mohammad Iqbal Khan. The session began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. The speaker announced to start the question hour related to the Industries Department and the minister for industries answered different question fielded by the legislators. Most queries were related to steel mills, environment and the energy issues. During the session, a treasury member, Mr Mian Naseer, as well opposition member Mr Wasim Akhtar of Jamaat e Islami asked the minister to inform the House about the steel mills’ locations, usage of tyres in furnaces. Replying to these queries, the minister said the House that the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz government in Punjab had recently completed a survey of existing factories and industries, especially steel mills, across the province and in Lahore. Mr Chaudhry Shafique informed the House that according to the survey report, 17,857 industrial units and 410 steel mills existed in Punjab and a summary of this report had been sent to Punjab Chief Minister Mr Shahbaz Sharif for his approval. He said after the approval of the Punjab chief minister that the industries existing in the residential areas would be shifted to other locations. He also said that the government had served notices on 267 mills in Lahore to shift to the SIE. He went on to say that he was certain that they would be able to shift them within the next 4 months.
