Palaeolithic excavation of a cave in Mani, Peloponnesus, - TopicsExpress

Palaeolithic excavation of a cave in Mani, Peloponnesus, Greece. The PaGE Project (Paleoanthropology at the Gates of Europe) conducts intensive paleoanthropological fieldwork in Greece and aims to systematically investigate known palaeoanthropological localities, to identify new ones and increase the number of hominin and Paleolithic sites from this area. In 2013, the PaGE team started excavating the cave of Mavri Spilia, located at the western side of the Mani peninsula. The excavation campaign gave very promising results: the cave is rich in anthropogenic deposits, which contain abundant lithic artefacts and faunal remains, often found in association with combustion features and hearth sequences. Thus far, most of the lithic artefacts that have been unearthed show typo-technological traits indicative of the Middle Palaeolithic period. We are now recruiting members for the excavation team and we are particularly looking for archaeologists and paleoanthropologists with experience in Palaeolithic excavations. We are especially welcoming applications from people who have already worked at projects run by Tübingen scholars, as well as from archaeologists holding a Masters or PhD degree. The excavation will take place from October 1st to November 9th (5 weeks). The project covers the accommodation costs (incl. breakfast) and provides a per diem of 30 euro.
