Palau To Attend Pacific Island Legislatures Assembly KOROR, Palau (Island Times) – A delegation from Palau consisting of two senators, three delegates and three staff of the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) will be leaving to Hawaii next week to attend the 32nd General Assembly of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures (APIL). The APIL general assembly will be on June 24-27. Participating from Palau are Sen. J. Uduch Sengebau-Senior, Sen. Mason Whipps, Del. Yutaka Gibbons Jr., Del. Lucio Ngiraiwet, Del. Marino Ngemaes, Assistant Clerk Marcello Ngirkelau, Administrative Assistant Tricia Wong and Committee Assistant O’card Tanya Rengulbai. There will also be delegations from American Samoa, Saipan, Republic of Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Guam and Hawaii. The proposed agenda for the upcoming APIL meeting is renewable energy and health insurance for Pacific communities. The APIL meets regularly to consider matters in areas where regional cooperation, coordination, exchange and assistance may help governments achieve their goals through collective action. They also discuss issues including those arising in the areas of Resources and Economic Development, Commerce, Legislation, Energy, Regional Security and Defense, Communications, Cultural Appreciation, Health and Social Services, Education, Agriculture, Air and Sea Transportation, Aquaculture, Sports and Recreation, Youth and Senior Citizens, Tourism, Finance, Political Status, External Relations, and Development Banking. Following news earlier about government officials going off island, which drew criticisms from the public, Sen. Senior explained for her part the importance of the upcoming APIL meeting, saying that this meeting will be a good venue for the leaders from different countries in the region to share or exchange ideas that may be beneficial to participating countries. Senior, who is one of the APIL directors along with Del. Gibbons, will be giving the country report for Palau in the meeting.
