Palau aims to address the diverse needs of women and men in government service delivery 9 December 2014, Noumea Fekita-MoUThe Government of Palau has committed to strengthening institutions to address the diverse needs and concerns of women and men, and to consider gender issues, through a gender mainstreaming approach across all government policies and programmes, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC). Honorable Minister Baklai Temengil, who signed the MoU on behalf of the Government of Palau on 20 November 2014, acknowledged that much work was required to raise awareness of gender mainstreaming as a strategy for addressing gender issues. ‘This MOU with SPC will support the Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs to raise awareness and build capacity on gender mainstreaming and gender issues in Palau. We are also in the midst of developing our first gender mainstreaming policy for government, so I think the timing is perfect,’ she said. Deputy Director-General of SPC, Fekita Utoikamanu, thanked Minister Temengil and the Government of Palau for prioritising gender mainstreaming as a development issue. ‘We need to build on the momentum generated at this twenty year review of the Beijing Platform for Action. Gender mainstreaming is a critical strategy to ensuring sustainable development for all people,’ DDG Utoikamanu highlighted. The MoU is based on outcomes from a stocktake of the capacity of the Government of Palau in mainstreaming gender, commissioned by the Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs. Activities under the agreement will be aligned to and funded under the Progressing Gender Equality in Pacific Island Countries (PGEP) initiative. PGEP is funded by the Government of Australia under the regional programme, Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development.
