Palestine - Gaza crisis (ECHO, UN OCHA, UNRWA) On 23 July, the Human Rights Council opened the 21st Special Session on the human rights situation in Palestine. Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that the disregard for international humanitarian law and for the right to life was shockingly evident in recent event entailing killing of children in Gaza. According to UN OCHA, at least 170 children have been killed in Gaza over the past 16 days. One child was killed each hour during the last two days. Gaza’s Power Plant, providing electricity to half of the Gazan population, has been shut down until further notice after two Israeli missiles landed in its proximity during an airstrike on 22 July. Two generators were damaged by the attack and may need extensive repairs. The International Committee of the Red Cross is reportedly attempting to coordinate repairs to the plant with Israel. Power supply is now reduced to a few hours per day in Gaza. For the second time, UNRWA announced that, during regular inspections, rockets were discovered hidden in a vacant school. UNRWA “strongly and unequivocally condemns the group or groups responsible for this flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law.
