Palestinian Liberations: Feminism and the Intersectional Wednesday 13 November 2013 12.45 – 14.00 The Middle East Centre Library St Antony’s College sant.ox.ac.uk/mec/ (a light lunch will be available on a first-come, first-served basis) Speaker: Mezna Qato This seminar explores the growing conversation amongst Palestinians and Palestine allies on the question of feminism in national movement work. Rather than re-tread discussions on the role of feminism in liberation movements, this talk will instead explore the ways in which feminist and queer theory, and intersectionality more broadly, have impacted Palestine organizing and scholarship, particularly in the US and UK. What have these categories offered, and have they been transformative for Palestine work? Mezna Qato is completing her doctorate at St. Antonys College on the history of educational regimes for Palestinians. In January, she will take up the post of Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Palestine Studies at Columbia University. The Women’s Rights Research Seminar at Oxford was founded in 2009 with the initial aim of directing interdisciplinary scholarly attention to the legal status of women in Iran. Since then, the research group has broadened its purview to the rights of women in the Middle East, covering topics such as the politics of fertility, women in ethnic minorities, and the treatment of women in states governed and influenced by Islamic law and jurisprudence. WRRS welcomes seminar and paper proposals from any discipline. Enquiries: Binesh Hass ([email protected]).
