Palestinians Arabs and Israeli Jews both demand the right to freedom from control by the other, independence, and self-determination. There are political leaders in both camps who have become convinced that the only way to obtain or retain those rights is to continue attacking the other until he is defeated, no matter how long it takes. There are others who understand that total military victory is impossible, and that a negotiated arrangement that gives both sides most of what they demand is the only possible solution to the conflict. IMHO, Mahmoud Abbas and Yair Lapid are political leaders who are part of the latter camp. I think listening to what they have to say helps us understand what any feasible peace plan would have to look like. I recently posted some of Abbas recent remarks in that vein, and now I am posting some of Lapids.
