Pallo Jordan Bows Out of Politics August 12, 2014 Respected ANC MP and former Cabinet Member Pallo Jordan has resigned from parliament and from the governing ANC party. Jordan submitted his resignation to the ANC on Monday, two weeks after a report was published in the Sunday Times which revealed Jordan did not in fact possess the degrees he claimed to hold. ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the party accepted Jordan’s resignation from parliament but his resignation from the party’s national executive committee and the ANC itself has been referred to the “structures of the organisation”. “The African National Congress [ANC] has received a detailed explanation from Comrade Pallo Jordan on claims that his qualifications are false,” said Mantashe. “True to his character, he has apologised to the ANC, its membership and South Africa as a whole.” “A man of Comrade Pallo Jordan’s intellect does not need to perpetuate deceit; he must be given time to deal with his guilt. As the ANC, we have accepted his public apology; to apologise was not an action of the faint hearted,” he added. The office of parliament’s chief whip, Stone Sizani released a statement reaffirming its respect for Jordan: “He is one of the movement’s greatest products, a public intellectual par excellence and a consummate historian. While academic achievements are important, they can never truly define one’s wisdom, intelligence or intellectual depth,” said spokesperson Moloto Mothapo. “With or without academic qualifications, Comrade Jordan to us remains a source of great pride not only as an intellectual giant but for the immense contribution and sacrifices he has made and continues to make for our nation and its young democracy,” he added. The Sunday Times reported on the weekend that Jordan kept a low profile after the report emerged. According to the report close friends, comrades and neighbours had not seen or heard from Jordan since the report emerged. sabreakingnews.co.za/2014/08/12/pallo-jordan-bows-out-of-politics/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
