Pamela in Reference here: I dont usually write about childrens books, but there is one in particular that I want to mention this weekend. Its Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco. The two main characters are Union soldiers in the Civil War; one is black (Pinkus, or Pink), one is white (Sheldon, or Say). Pink saves Says life, but Pinks mother dies as a result. They are captured and Pink is immediately executed. Say lives thru time in a prison camp but lives on to become a father and grandfather...and one of his descendents is Patricia Polacco herself. She and her relatives live in part to remember Say, but Pink has no descendents to remember him. At the end of the book, Polacco asks readers to say his name aloud, Pinkus Aylee, as a memorial to this man who is otherwise forgotten. Its a beautiful read for this Memorial Day weekend, which, while being the unofficial start of summer, is best utilized to memorialize those who died in service to our country. Thank you, veterans, and thank you Patricia Polacco for a book that gives me goosebumps and tears every time I read it.
