Pandanus palms grow in the top end - they are spikey and high, the temperatures are in the 40s and the palms are often located far from communities - a long walk! The palm leaves are peeled and stripped before they are dyed. We have enjoyed having weavers from Arnhem Land in at Tali Gallery showing us and teaching how it is done - and we know how difficult it is! The dyes are procured from the roots of grasses and trees and bush fruits as well as charcoal - and collecting and preparing them is arduous. And this is before the weaving begins. We have a varied collection of mats in a range of sizes with and without fringes and including exceptional colours. The prices are set by the communities and range from $550 to $1200 depending on the seniority of the artist and her awards and inclusion in exhibitions as well as the quality and density of the weaving and the number of colours. They look great hung on a wall - one client placed her purchase under a glass coffee table. There are some on our website, others are not uploaded. Please email me if youre interested in knowing about any particular mat - [email protected]
