Panel at NAISA this year! And I get to be on it with Native Appropriations SAY WHAT?! See you in DC in June! Indigenous Media Analytics: Interrogating Contemporary Representations of Native People on Television Historical misrepresentations of Native people in popular media have promoted commodification of Indigenous cultures and informed public policies that challenge self-determination. Studies show that stereotypical representations negatively affect Native peoples’ self-esteem while also supporting colonial ideologies of cultural and racial authenticity. This panel engages Indigenous media analytics to critique contemporary television programming and interrogate how these representations impact Indigenous sovereignties. Together these papers center Native Studies methodologies to demonstrate the large stakes of the small screen. “A Queer Image: AMCs The Killing and Chief Nichole Jackson” Dr. Brook Colley (Portland State) examines dominant images of tribal sovereignty and gaming in AMC’s television series The Killing. “Sovereignty, Satire, and the U.S. South: The Case of John Redcorn” Dr. Gina Caison (Georgia State) interrogates the animated series King of the Hill, exploring how John Redcorn’s land claims reorients Native sovereignty in a region dominated by narratives of removal. “Living on the Edge: Native Identity and Representation on ‘The Red Road’” Stephanie Lumsden, M.A. (Portland State) unpacks native/settler relationships in “The Red Road” and examines how desire and secrecy are articulated in this Native centered series. “What the Washington Re*sk*ns are all about: South Park, The Daily Show and Native Mascots” Cutcha Risling Baldy, C.Phil (UC, Davis) critiques the erasure of racism in mascot-centric segments to illustrate how this affects struggles for self-determination. Dr. Adrienne Keene (Brown University), Post-doctoral Fellow in Native American Studies and the author of Native Appropriations will provide commentary.
