Pangasinan mounts chess fest APRIL M. MONTES DAGUPAN CITY, October 21 (PIA) – The provincial government and the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) held the grand Pangasinan age group chess championship last October 19 to 20 to promote chess among the youth. The two-day chess tourney, which was held at the Provincial Training and Development Center in Lingayen town, gathered chess players in the country, ages 20 years and below. The tournament was divided into the following age groups, with their corresponding prizes: 20 and under (1st place-P10, 000; 2nd place-P7, 000; 3rd place-P5, 000; 4thplace-P3, 000; 5th place-P2, 000; and 6th to 10th place-P1, 000); 18 and under (1stplace-P7, 000; 2nd place-P5, 000; 3rd place-P3, 000; 4th place-2, 000; 5th place-1,000; and 6th to 10th place-P500 each). For the 16 and under category, the cash prizes are: first place-P5, 000; second place-P4, 000; third place-P3, 000; fourth place-P2, 000; fifth place-P1, 000; and sixth to tenth place-P500 each. For the 14 and under, 12 and under, 10 and under, and eight and under categories, each has a distribution of cash prizes, namely: first place-P3, 000; second place-P2, 000; third place-P1, 500; fourth place-P1, 000; fifth place-P700; and sixth to tenth place-P500 each. Trophies and medals were awarded to the top five finishers in the 20 and under category and to the top three finishers in the other age groups. The age group tournament was the second event, after the 3rd Amado T. Espino, Jr. Chess Clinic, in the annual Pangasinan Chess Festival sponsored by the provincial government as part of the youth and sports development programs of Pangasinan. FIDE Master Haridas Pascua urged young Pangasinense chess players to boost interest in playing chess through joining chess tournaments from where they could learn new things in the mind game (MCA/AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan/PCL)
