Panther Nation... Connor here. I have had the scoop on this Steve Smith situation since late Saturday night, as I have a source within a source. The source told me that Steve Smith would be released on Tuesday before free agency. At first it sounded foolish, but the source was VERY reliable. And then this evening happened, and I realized that it is a reality. While no one will wanna trade for him and that money, the Panthers are done with him. Not just because of the money however. The source also told me the organization is ready for the future and with Smitty in there, Cam and Luke cannot lead this team with someone like Smitty in there, who is THE Carolina Panther. Speculation also with the jerseys on panther shops...that is just a conincidence. You also cannot find hardy and some other jerseys as well. At first I too thought of Smith Sr. however, that is just getting my hopes up. While this is going to be a horrible day, let us all take some deep breaths... It feels weird to say this, but Steve Smith will never put on a Panther helmet again. And in 12 hours or less, he will be officially gone from the Panthers squad. HOWEVER, there is some good news (slightly). This source also told me Hakeem Nicks to Carolina is looking bright. It isnt a for sure thing like the Smitty thing, however there is a very, very high chance. While this is depressing, its all a part of a business. For me and others, we grew up watching this role model. For his career to end this way should be shamed upon. I myself wish this beautiful organization would have ended it better, however it is what it is. Keep Pounding, and tommorow, the Carolina Panthers will FINALLY take their first step into the future, and begin a new era, just as the one Steve Smith was in that we all knew and came to love. -CH, with sympathy
