Paola Pisi - Syria It has been confirmed that the much-loved president of the Aleppo Palestinian charity, Osama Abu Hashem (a.k.a. Abu Omar), died yesterday morning under torture in the headquarters of the regimes State Security division in Aleppo, three months after his detention by shabiha (pro-regime paramilitaries) in the Palestinian refugee camp in Neirab. He was almost 69 years old. Abu Hashem, a graduate in civil engineeering from Aleppo University, was born in 1945 in the village of Tarsheeha in Palestine, with his family fleeing to Neirab in Aleppo in the Nakba of 1948. He was one of the most prominent and respected public figure in Aleppo, both within the Palestinian and the Syrian community, working throughout his life to help his fellow Palestinians in the refugee camp and doing great work to help the poorest people in Aleppo.
