Parable of Pain and Laughter: Deep in the Amazonian rain forest. Its past sunset. A research expedition has just set camp, settling in for the night, when a crashing sound wakes everyone up. Out of the surrounding blackness of the jungle an apparition staggers into the circle of light of the camp, only to collapse few seconds later. It was a man. He looked half starved to death. His bones showed under the skin which was covered in bruises, cuts, lacerations, and freshly formed scabs at which he kept picking absentmindedly. His hair and beard were sticking out in all directions and swarming with critters. On top of it all there was an arrow stuck in his chest. After being revived, he told a hair-raising story of his own expedition which was assaulted by locals. Only he managed to escape. Hes been wondering in the jungle alone for the past month. And what about that arrow in your chest, they asked him when he finished his harrowing tale, does it hurt? Oh, no, he replied, only when I laugh.
