Paradise is not [obtained] by your wishful thinking nor by that of the People of the Scripture. Whoever does a wrong will be recompensed for it, and he will not find besides Allah a protector or a helper. [4:123] We cannot attain Jannah just by wanting Jannah and then sitting and doing nothing. Allah says our wishful thinking will not get us to Jannah and Allah very interestingly also says that the wishful thinking of the People of the Scriptures will also not get them to Jannah. This reminds me how some Christian denominations state that as long as one believes in Jesus, they have an automatic ticket to heaven. But here Allah states that just by wanting you can’t get it. We have to not only believe but our lives also have to be lived according to it. Islam is belief and action hand in hand. If we believe in Allah, then we must also be amongst those that perform the five pillars- that establish and watch over their prayers, that take care of the poor, that fast during Ramadan, at least just the basic minimum and then build on. Only with a firm belief and action can be attain Allah’s paradise- we are accountable for everything we do. Do good, and you get rewarded. Do wrong, and you are accountable for that as well except for those who turn back to Allah in sincerity. MM
