Paranormal Metrou Imported Post THE HAUNTED LEEDS ASYLUM-THACKRAY MUSEUM Ghostly figures! Temperature drops, cries, dark shadows, poltergeist activity, this is just of the things recorded here! This is the extremely haunted and frightening Leeds Asylum also known as The Thackray Museum! The old workhouse has a daunting history which often refers back to the dark side! This building is sinister…this building is haunted…this building is pretty bloody frightening! The Leeds Union Workhouse building, which now houses the Thackray Medical Museum, was built between 1858 and 1861. Originally designed to house 784 inmates, it was a vast improvement on the conditions endured by the workers at the old Workhouse in Lady Lane, but conditions were nevertheless harsh, with plain, whitewashed walls and old wooden floors. The people who worked here had nowhere to live, no other way of earning an income and no hope of surviving without the support of the Workhouses. They worked extremely long hours, carrying out repetitive and tedious manual labour such as unravelling ‘old rope’ in return for their keep and a roof over their heads. Their treatment at the hands of the supervisors was often cruel and many realised that their lives would be short lived, with their final resting place likely to be the Beckett Street Cemetary, just across the street. Men and women were segregated at the Workhouses and their only opportunity for fresh air and exercise was in the walled yards behind the building, where they were permitted for just a short time each day. There was a significant Typhus epidemic which struck down more than 100 people and the building remained the Workhouse right up until 1944, while St. James’s Hospital was developed around it. For many years people didn’t like coming into St. James’s because it was known as ‘the Workhouse Hospital’. This building is vast and offers a multitude of areas to investigate, including a pitch black ‘theatre’ room and an authentic Victorian Street Scene with winding pathways and its many exhibits include the skeleton of Mary Bateman, the Yorkshire Witch who was tried and executed for witchcraft during the early 19th century.
