Paras‚ Sunil‚ Jamuna‚ Chahana receive awards KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Youth and Sports honoured national cricket team skipper Paras Khadka, women’s national football team skipper Jamuna Gurung, karateka Sunil Lama and wushu player Chahana Bomjan Lama with National Sports Talent Award today. Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) was declared the best association. All the winners received Rs 100,000 each. The ministry also felicitated other five personalities of various fields during the same programme on the occasion of 14th International Youth Day. Paras, who is currently in a Sri Lankan tour for the preparation of ACC Emerging Teams Cup, was not present on the occasion. His father Mohan collected the award on his behalf. Paras led Nepal to three title triumphs and one runner-up finish in 2012-13. Under Paras‚ Nepal claimed the ICC World Cricket League Division-IV in Malaysia and Division-III in Bermuda and ACC Trophy Elite at the United Arab Emirates. Nepal had also finished runners-up behind Afghanistan in the ACC Twenty20 Cup on home soil. Since winning the 11th South Asian Games gold medal in Dhaka in 2010, the Nepal APF Club player Sunil has been a dominant figure in Nepali karate. He claimed gold medals in the Singapore Open, 13th Asia Pacific Shito-Ryu Karate Championships in Hong Kong and second Fazilatunnesa Mujib International Martial Arts Championships in Dhaka. Sunil was excited to get the award and said: “It will boost my morale to perform better in future events.” Sunil said his objective now was to claim a medal in the 17th Asian Games. Jamuna, who is also the APF Club skipper, has been a key member of the Nepali football team that won three consecutive silver medals in three international outings. She led Nepal to the runners-up finishes in the 11th SA Games apart from first and second SAFF Women’s Football Championships. Jamuna is currently recovering from a knee injury that she sustained during a friendly tour in Sikkim. Chahana won a bronze medal in the fourth World Junior Wushu Championships in Macau. It was a medal that brought an end to international drought in the discipline. An overwhelmed Chahana said she had never expected to get the award ahead of her seniors. NVA President Dan Bahadur Tamang credited the success to his team. “Nobody had expected that our association will get such an award. “Volleyball was remained passive for a long time, but we have done everything we could to revive game after we took over the reins,” added Tamang. NVA conducted 23 national tournaments apart from first South Asian Invitational Men’s Volleyball Tournament after the new committee headed by Tamang was elected in April last year. Chairman of the interim election government Khil Raj Regmi and Minister for Youth and Sports Ram Kumar Shrestha among others felicitated the sports personalities.
