Parasha Question - Rashi opens the Parasha commenting on the lineage of Pinchas, who is the son of Elazar (the current Cohen Gadol) and grandson of Aharon (Cohen Gadol Emeritus) - this is done to show that Pinchas is of good lineage, because Bnei Yisrael was attacking Pinchas because his Mother was the daughter of Yitro (an oved avodah Zarah) - my question is, how can Elazar, who climbed so far, be the Cohen Gadol while being married to a giyores? I realize that he was not a Cohen when he married his wife, nor had matan torah presumably occured, but how could he be appointed as Cohen Gadol whilst married to her? Which was both after matan Torah, and after he was appointed a Cohen.
