Pardes student Jessica Jobanek reflects on the first day of the Pardes trip to Poland which included a Jewish cemetery in Warsaw, the Warsaw Ghetto, the Jewish Historical Institute, the Museum of the History of the Jews and the Nozyk Synagogue. Our final stop of the evening, was to the Nozyk Synagogue, the only surviving pre-war synagogue in Warsaw. There, we had the tremendous honor of meeting the Chief Rabbi of Poland, a funny and charismatic American-born man who spoke to us about the state of Polish Jewry. After the Nazis and 40 years of Soviet rule, many families hid their Judaism, and the current generation is just now uncovering their Jewish roots and trying to find their way back into the community. One thing that stuck out from his talk? He said he is in touch with a family from France that is thinking of moving to Poland to escape French anti-Semitism. When Poland seems like the safer place to be Jewish, that is a very scary statement on the state of things in France. #pardesonthemove
