Parents are largely responsible of the success or failure of their child in school. Indeed, their role is not, as some believe, to force the child to revise his courses all the time, to deprive him of all manner of distractions, and to humiliate him whenever he gets a bad grade. No, this method of education has never reported good results. On the contrary, they must learn to communicate with their child, to respect him, to take him as a friend. And only at that point, they can understand him and help him to overcome his difficulties. This is also the role of teachers towards their students. Admittedly, parents are right to be surprised with bad grades of their child. But in this case, instead of addressing to him words with heavy consequences, it is preferable to ask him for explanations. Indeed, disturbances in family or disputes between parents, can have serious consequences on academic performance of child. If it appears that bad grades are the result of a certain laziness of the child, his parents can discuss with him, by putting him in front his responsibilities. If he persists, they can punish him by depriving him of certain advantages. But, the thing that is absolutely necessary to avoid, is to be in permanent conflict with him, because the consequences will be very heavy. In a general way, parents must supervise their child and help him in his studies, without suffocating him, by transforming the family evenings into permanent sessions of oral examinations. They must make him feel that they are only guides, and that he is always the master of his actions and decisions. So, he acquires an autonomy more and more big. A final word to parents : You can not ask your child to motivate for the reading, if yourselves do not read, as you can not cheer him up in periods of preparation of examinations, if yourselves can not dominate your own anxiety !
