Parents, as hard as this is for me to write, please do not help in your childs school while the teachers are striking. I know, it goes against everything we stand for as parents and community members! But, if these subs are any good at what they do, they will be able to manage and teach a classroom full of students without your help. You should not have to take kids to the bathroom, tell the sub kids names, pass out papers, run copies, work with small groups. If you fear it will be too chaotic, well... If you are that uncomfortable having your kids at a school full of subs, and you have the ability to do so, simply keep them home with you and do educationally sound activities at home. Read fiction and non fiction texts on topics you know the kids were studying at school prior to this fiasco, ask your kids to write you a story or a letter or a paragraph about a particular topic, do some math practice- search online for free math worksheets for kids or access one of the school approved sites. Teacher Tube is a You Tube-like site with teacher approved and created curricular videos. Obviously this post is pointed toward elementary students rather than high school... and it is only my opinion after all.
