Parents contact me regularly asking questions and advice on how can they better their childs dance education and how and where to start their childs dance career. The 1st thing you have to ask yourself is, where do you see your child heading as a dancer and how far would you like him or her to go? You must have a destination in mind and set realistic goals. You must be willing to sacrifice as much as the child is willing to. 2nd, You have to evaluate your childs progress year to year. If you DO NOT SEE progression yearly, that is the 1st red flag. If your child is not persistent in asking you to take him or her to the studio, 2nd red flag. The most important of all is seeking out workshops, conventions, and reading up on different choreographers that are out there. Some parents really dont understand the importance of workshops. The training a child gets from a workshop is double sometimes tripled to what they get on a regular day at the studio. All the kids that live by the workshop mentality, 99% of the time, their level of talent and discipline is higher than the norm. Choreographers have been saying this for years. But then again its comes down to the individual and where he or she plans to go with it. Some kids like dancing some love dancing. Liking can be momentary, loving is last longing. I like Oreo sundaes now but in the winter I may not anymore. You may bump heads with siblings but you will always love them. I always say you attend dance classes to learn 1st then dance later.
