Paris Friday 14th DEC Barry Miles, JJ Lebel etc celebrate the hundred years of the birth of American writer, essayist and artist William S. Burroughs, the Department of Literature and Languages of the Ecole Normale Supérieure organises a tribute conference on Friday 12 December 2014, from 2pm to 6pm. William Burroughs, le dernier humaniste ? Vendredi 12 décembre 2014, 14h-18h, Amphi Rataud, 45 rue d’Ulm 75005 Paris Burroughs’s work and character have been questioning American letters and the idea of avant-garde since the second half of the 20th century. His prolific literary production has been ever-surprising and still hints at a widely encompassing mind, both humanistic and visionary. First a recurrent target of Establishment America’s censorship power, Burroughs progressively became the figurehead of dystopian, prophetic counter-culture. His work is at once humorous and paranoid, poetic and monstrous : within it are born marginal worlds which have sheltered and will shelter the literary outsiders, the precursors of avant-garde, and everyone’s imagination. The extent of Burroughs’ thinking can be seen through his extraordinary polyvalent set of skills : novels, essays, records, films, paintings, poems… Every medium proved an artistic opportunity for the hombre invisible as he was called – an opportunity to leave a trace and to signal to those to come.
