Paris Was the Place by Susan Conley (She is the writing teacher of my friend Robin.) Interesting novel. Takes place in 1989 Paris with references to CA and AZ and a bit in India. Willow is a poetry teacher/author who volunteers one night a week to help illegal teenage females (from Africa, Middle East, India) learn to write in French to better prepare them to make their case when they appear before a French judge. Other subplots involving her brother and a lover. Is certainly applicable to present circumstances in many countries. I usually read for plot and characters; however, the writing is excellent and was a lovely surprise.
