Coordinate all aspects of carrying out the functions and programs of the parks interpretive operations and Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center. Directly supervises three GS-9 park rangers, one GS-9 education specialist, two GS-7 education technicians, up to three GS-5 park guides and up to 10 GS-3, 4 and 5 seasonal park rangers during peak visitation. Performs the full range of supervisory functions. Plans, directs, coordinates, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of Park interpretive programs that include presentation to the general public, outdoor recreation, and educational outreach. Manages a variety of specialized functions including visitor assistance, interpretive program management, partnership management, limited public relations, and program promotion. Provides overall supervision and coordination of training for employees, interns, and volunteers. Training includes customer service, orientation, interpretive, and education skills as outlined by the Interpretive Development Program. Assures training occurs for division of the parks natural and cultural history and resource management interpretation. Manages and supervises operations at six public use facilities. Major work requirements include development of long and short range goals, objectives, standards, and plans for operating the interpretive program. Works with outside institutions, especially those in the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area. Manages the parkwide cooperating association sales. Serves as primary liaison with the non-profit management partner staff at the Environmental Education Center (EEC) for the operations of residential and day environmental education. Works with partner on short and long-range program planning and implementation. Manages and supervises picnic shelter reservations and fee collection, interpretive program reservations and fee collection, passport sales/distribution, and collection and processing of donations. The position may require periods of strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, biking, and lifting of objects weighing approximately 50 pounds (exhibits). The majority of the work is sedentary. Most assignments are performed indoors, but some activities require exposure to variances in weather and terrain. Area Information : Located in Northeastern, Ohio Cuyahoga Valley National Park is situated along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River Valley in a suburban setting between the cities of Akron and Cleveland. The park is predominately natural forest and meadow with some areas of agriculture and excellent outdoor recreation opportunities. Winters are moderately cold with average temperatures in the 20 to 30 degree ranges. Heavy snowfall is not unusual. Summers are moderately warm, average temperatures in the high 70s and 80s with occasional warm spells in the 90s. Rural, suburban, and urban communities are all within a reasonable commuting distance. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Back to top To be eligible for this position, you must possess one of the following: Specialized Experience - One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills,and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.Examples of specialized experience could include Interpretive Park Ranger, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; archeological or historical preservation research work; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-09 grade level in the federal service. OR Education - At least three years of progressively higher graduate level study, a PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in directly related fields such as natural resource management,natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. OR Equivalent Combination of Graduate Education and Specialized Experience ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS You must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license. You will be required to have a favorably adjudicated background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint check. You will be required to complete a one year supervisory probationary period if one has not been completed in the past. You will be required to wear the NPS uniform in accordance with NPS policy.
