Parked up at the New Plymouth waterfront. Impressed with the awesome 11km coast walk from Bell Block to the port. It was full of people all day - kids on scooters, old people on bikes,, families walking, dogs dragging skaters. What a great community space and good example of a city making use of its natural assets. Lots of little design elements to give space for people to stop and socialise or take a break. Also impressed to see the council stall at the Sunday market, asking people where they want NP to go over the next 20 years. There is still a lot of racism to deal with in Taranaki - exemplified by the furore over the new Maori ward for council elections and a legacy of being settled by the militia that stole the land off the tangata whenua I suppose - but there are some visionary things going on here that other councils could take note of
