Parking Commission Chairman Mike Dowling said after the meeting - TopicsExpress

Parking Commission Chairman Mike Dowling said after the meeting that beginning sometime in the first quarter of 2014, the hours that downtown parking would be paid in two garages will be expanded. However the Parking Commission has yet to decide on the hours and whether a change would ripple through all city parking lots, which is generally expected. The need for change is apparent when looking at the Parking Commission’s annual budget, which is about $100,000 in the red. It’s this deficit that’s prompting the organization’s commissioners to look for ways to operate it more like a business with an eye on the bottom line, members of the organization said as they discussed reasons for a change in paid hours while seeking to dispel rumors that the garages would be going to 24 hour per day paid parking on a daily basis beginning in January. Some of those who park in the city-managed garages wait until after the people who collect the fees leave each evening before departing from their jobs, it was noted. The initial step to expand the hours for paid parking could be to charge from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Dowling said after the meeting and noted that while there has been talk on this point, no decision has been made.
