Parkston lands six on Class 11B team: Redfield-Doland’s Baloun earns honorable mention Posted: Monday, Dec 1st, 2014 BY: JIM HOLLAND/RAPID CITY JOURNAL Come playoff time in high school football, the cream rises to the top. Teams make deep runs in the postseason generally because of a strong mix of stellar athletes on their rosters and this year’s Class 11B All-State selections reflect that talent level. Class 11B state champion Parkston leads the all-state roster with six picks. McCook Central/Montrose, which fell one game short of the 11B finals with a semifinal loss to Parkston, adds five players. Winner and Canton each contributed three players, with two players each from runner-up St. Thomas More, Aberdeen Roncalli, Groton Area and Sioux Valley, and one selection from Bon Homme. Quarterback Zach Lundquist from Aberdeen Roncalli threw for 2,136 yards and 22 touchdowns to help Roncalli to a 9-1 record. Wide receiver Brayden McNeary caught 35 passes for 372 yards and seven touchdowns. “(Zach) really ran our offense well,” said Roncalli coach Terry Dosch. “(He) made good decisions and orchestrated our no-huddle. (McNeary) is a tremendous athlete who makes the impossible look easy.” Parkston, which won its first state championship with a 30-27 win over St. Thomas More, is represented by running back Wes Dvorak, tight end Brady Reiff, tackle Austin Bertram, guard Caleb Horstman, long snapper Wes Genant and linebacker Miles Semmler. Dvorak, also a 2013 pick for the Trojans, piled up 1,775 all-purpose yards, including 1,299 rushing yards on 100 carries and 29 touchdowns. “Wes was key to both the offense and defense this year. He has been a leader for us in and out of the season and is a big reason for our success,” Parkston coach Eric Norden said. Bertram, a four-year starter at tackle, recorded 66 tackles and 35 sacks with a fumble recovery and three blocked kicks. “His speed and strength are great tools that he has learned to maximize,” Norden said. Semmler had 66 tackles and also ran for 643 yards and 10 touchdowns. Horstman added 51 tackles as a guard. Tight end Reiff caught eight passes for 170 yards and five touchdowns. Both are four year starters. Genant is one of two juniors selected. Representing McCook Central/ Montrose are wide receiver Eric Hansen and guard John Hoiten on the offensive squad, along with end Will Gottlob, linebacker Joe Hanson and back Tyler Cleveland. Hanson rolled up 1,030 all-purpose yards, including 24 carries for 319 yards and four touchdowns, 13 catches for 277 yards and six touchdowns. Hoiten helped open holes for the offense and had 67 tackles (9 for loss) two sacks a fumble forced and fumble recovery. “Teams game-planned their defense to take Eric away from us,” said McCook Central/Montrose coach Ryan Evans. “We ran behind John and asked him to be our pulling guard time after time.” Cleveland recorded 70 tackles, Gottlob had 64 tackles and Hanson added 67 tackles for the Fighting Cougars. Runner-up St. Thomas More was led to its sixth trip to the finals by tackle Lincoln Feist and linebacker Carter Vincent. Feist, a repeat all-state selection, led the 11-2 Cavaliers with 74 tackles (45 solo, 15 for loss), three quarterback sacks and two interceptions. “Feist is the heart and soul of our line, both offensively and defensively,” said More head coach Wayne Sullivan. Vincent was in on 74 tackles (32 solo, six for loss), four sacks and had a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown. Vincent is a “hard-nosed (linebacker) that everyone wants on their team,” Sullivan said. From Winner are defensive end Brendan Harter, defensive back Tyrel Haley and special-teams player Sam Naasz. Haley had 43 tackles and an interception and Harter recorded 33 tackles (five for loss) and 2.5 sacks for Winner. Canton’s center Josh Lasley, lineman Aaron Van Voorst and back Anders Peterson earned a first-team nod. Peterson, a three-year starter, led the C-Hawks with 45 tackles and had an interception and four forced fumbles. “He was solid as a sophomore, very good last year and outstanding this year,” said Canton coach Rich Lundstrom. Lasley and Van Voorst cleared the way for the C-Hawks to gain 3,317 yards. Van Voorst had 39 tackles on defense. “We could always count on Aaron to do his job and do it well,” said Lundstrom of Van Voorst. “(Lasley) has worked his tail off to get where he is today.” Fullback Joel Thomsen and lineman Angelo Climenti were named to the team from Custer. Thomsen rushed 114 times for 923 yards, averaging 8.1 yards per carry, with 14 touchdowns. He caught 13 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and scored five more touchdowns, two each on punt and kickoff returns and another on an interception returns. Climenti led an offensive line that paved the way for Wildcats backs who rushed 368 times for 2,271 yards and 26 touchdowns. Groton Area sends running back Jackson Doeden and defensive back Spencer Knecht. Doeden averaged 125 yards per game for the Tigers carrying 215 times for 1,070 yards and 12 touchdowns. He added four touchdowns on 300 passing yards. “He was a punishing runner,” said Groton Area coach Shaun Wanner. “When we needed a few yards, Jackson got it for us.” Knecht, a three-year starter at strong safety for the Tigers, tallied 90 tackles (10 for a loss) an interception and two fumble recoveries. “He always was in the right position to make plays at his strong safety position,” Wanner said. Sioux Valley’s kicker Hunter Tietjen and punter Colin Kramer, a junior, also were named to the team. Tietjen hit 12-of-16 PATs and 5-of-7 field goals. Kramer averaged 34.4 yards per punt. Rounding out the team is Bon Homme defensive back Hunter Young, who recorded 88 total tackles (24 solo). “Hunter Young has set the bar high for future Cavaliers,” said coach Byron Pudwill. “His work ethic is second to none.” Honorable mention selections were QB/DB Matthew Eastmo, OL/DL Andrew Montoya and WR/DB Cole Thurness of St. Thomas More; OL/DL Matt Schlosser, TE/LB Landon Hoellein and RB/LB Colton Cox of Aberdeen Roncalli; RB/LB Jerry Kapperman of McCook Central/Montrose; RB/DB Nick Buchman of Tri-Valley; TE/DB Chuck Bakley of Bennett County; RB/DB Chase Kortan of Bon Homme; OL/DL Gabriel Chief Eagle of Red Cloud; TE/DE Casey Seidler of Custer; RB/DB Mason Keller of Mobridge/Pollock and RB/LB Jake Baloun of Redfield/Doland.
