Parsi Dare Meher; the 158 year old Fire Temple in Karachi, which has had the scared fire burning continuously inside for decades is open only to Zoroastrians. Needless to say it looks beautiful; quaint and peaceful. But this is as far as you will get if you are not a Zoroastrian. We stood outside looking longingly at this structure, asking a man who was coming out of it all about the rituals and customs practiced inside since we knew our limit was till the gate. Inside, two sweet looking old men were reading their morning newspaper, occasionally looking up to watch our exchange. A few minutes later, they smiled and signaled us to come in allowing us to walk around their courtyard and take a closer look. Ive gone to college with many Parsis, attended their weddings and been invited to Nowruz get togethers. If you ask me, Parsis really are the pride of Karachi; they run the most thriving businessess and many major gorgeous architecture around this city is due to the contributions of this wonderful and extremely intelligent community. I only pray times would improve so that many of them who have left Pakistan (mostly due to lack of opportunity) return to make us thrive once again.
