Part 1. How the Mohican people came to be: Long before The Great Crossing from the Muhekonnuk along the white island trail the ancient people came from The Father SUN and the hearts of our people were good. Father Sun was sad that his children left him so he walked low across the sky and the cold winds took away the game and the forests grew silent and even the birds stopped singing until only the grumblings of the childrens stomachs could be heard. The fathers became angry because their wives wailed and broke their bows to shame them for bringing them to that place. Some proposed to look for their Ancient home and return, but the white islands had melted into the sea. A few women and children found a valley that had many waters that ebbed and flowed like Muhhekonnuk described the path that took them from their homeland, and when they came upon a great river then they said to one another: This is like the MuhheKonnuk the ancient ones spoke of. This is our peoples birthplace and we shall plant our seed here and we shall put up our gate and strike the lodge pole here, and we shall keep our fires bright to warm the sky so that game might return, but we shall not let our grandfathers return and take us from this place. no. we will keep the eastern gate closed to all but our 4 cousins, and we shall watch from the tops of the hills as our children fill this valley.... For many years the forest remained still and frozen, and the people dug their food from out of the frozen ground. Then a great darkness fell across the land and the fires atop the hills were put out and the waters in the valley rose. But the people atop the hills remained in their lodges. One boy grew restless in his lodge and went out into the driving rain and soon he was lost. This was not an ordinary boy. This was The boy. He was the first of the Mahican born of Delaware and Muhhekaneew a daughter of Lenapee. her name Mohishanan-ayecan. Before long the lodge of the Muhekonnuk became disrupted. They realized the boy was gone from the lodge The cries from the highest hill tops could be heard throughout the valley. The people tried in vain to light the way but the rains were too much and soon the boy was swept away and out of the valley. The seed of the people....gone. Taken by katatakanewan Lenapee: The Snake Water Spirit. The tears of the people mingled with the water spirit and the water spirit had mercy and the boy found himself spat out into the crook of a tree. Above him was the nest of the great and noble eagle. The pair of eagles were saddened. They too had lost their first born when he fell from the nest into a night so dark not even their eyes could see where there son had gone and they too thought he was lost to The Snake Water Spirit, and after a long search they returned to their nest with sad hearts. The boy coughed and moved his foot. A tiny sound not gone unheard by the brooding mother above. She dove toward that sound with open talons. The white of her proud head streaked down, down as fast as lightning, and then she had him...safe! Her wet and naked baby...alive. Cold he was. As cold as death...but not quite; up she flew, up and over and into her nest. she tenderly lay her pale son into the soft down pulled from her very breast and scarcely before father eagle could get a glimpse she had him tucked safely beneath her and so the boy absorbed her warmth and he could only hear the tomtom beating of her great heart. He was now an eagle who only dreamed he was a boy. Part 2 coming soon
