Part 14 July 15, 2013 I do not know how far I had walked, but I recon I had been moving for about 3 hours when I saw a dot top a hill behind me. It appeared and disappeared quickly up and down the little rises in the desert highway. Standing parallel to the highway, I put on my best smile and stood straight, my bag to the left of my leg. My thumb way out. Man, when that car topped the hill where I stood, it was just coming out of warp speed. In an instant, it passed me and before I could get my head all the way turned to follow it, it was a hundred feet down squealing sideways trying to stop. It did but in a cloud of dust and burning blacktop. I was grinning like an idiot ‘cause I love speed. Two cool looking guys told me to get in the back if I wanted a ride. I was in before he finished that sentence. The floorboard in the back stunk with piles of empty beer cans. One of them tossed me a beer; I downed it, and was given another. The sound of the hot rod engine was beautiful. I could feel it right up through my groin, if you know what I mean. For a long time, the evening kept us wrapped in turquoise. As I lie half-asleep on the back seat, I saw the deep ocean blue settle on the rough mountains as we left Texas behind and entered New Mexico.
