Part 3 of 4 from Nz Herald - Closing the Gap. What is - TopicsExpress

Part 3 of 4 from Nz Herald - Closing the Gap. What is interesting is the significant difference in the percentage of students in 2013 leaving school in Nz with Level 2 NCEA or higher based in ethnicity. Remembering that in Nz Maori are the recognised indigenous people and have all the welfare, benefits, education assistance and support available and yet they lag significantly behind the other groups - including the Pasifika students. Ive seen it asked - why then can Australia be blamed for the lack of take up of continuing education of Maori students here in Australia when, in Nz with all the support and programs available, there is a much lower level of education in the Maori group being realised. These stats from Nz surely then has to be considered when lookjng at education levels being reached here and also realising that Maori do not and should not have any more or any less support than all other Nz migrants here in oz - whether European, Asian, African etc New Zealanders. 2013 % of students based on ethnicity - Level 2 NCEA or higher achieved (in New Zealand) Asian students 87% European NZers 80% Pasifika students 71.8% Maori students 58.6% A number of initiatives introduced in schools, targeting Maori and Pasifika student achievement, have been credited with helping boost success rates among those groups. These stats cant be ignored when relating education outcomes and results in Australia - the above figures are also with the Nz government funded specific programs for Maori and Pasifika students, many that have been running for nearly a decade now, and there is no way the Australian govt should fund likewise for maori, when they are running a much needed closing the gap for the Australian indigenous peoples, the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. Opinions?
