Part 4 of 10: Wave-Particle Duality. Each part in this series is merely one piece to a larger picture. In this part we find ourselves in the 1920s alongside the leading physicists struggling to grapple with the very nature of the subatomic realm. Improved mathematical methods made it possible to describe atomic structure and behavior alternately as particle-like and wave-like, but this was not enough for those wanting a solid, definitive conceptual model. In part 5 we will see why a solid, definitive conceptual model is simply not possible. In part 6 we will begin detailing a actual experiment involving lasers, mirrors and photon detectors that shows us why physicists were scratching their heads. Afterwards, we will actually see what quantum mechanics is and discuss the same experiment in that language.
