Part 8 THE EMMACULATE CALLING Emmaculate had been extremely busy searching information on the four main contenders to the post of Provincial Overseer, GAP Ministries. She checked on Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms and her file steadily thickened. She established and renewed friendships with members of the various assemblies pastored by the aspiring Overseers. She quickly joined Pastor Makwerera’s music fan club and went to his offices to buy all his CDs and DVDs. She quickly struck a conversation with the receptionist cum personal assistant. ‘I like Pastor’s music,’ she said as she was paying the money to the girl, who introduced herself as Samantha. ‘Oh hya, he is good.’ Samantha replied. ‘I am sure he is making a lot of money with the music,’ she tried to generate conversation. ‘Ummm I am not so sure about that.’ They spoke a while and eventually exchanged contacts as Emmaculate claimed she knew one or two people who could market his music. Before leaving she offered the lady a lunch some time when she would be free. Immediately Samantha brightened up. ‘Awww that’s so nice of you,’ she beamed. ‘If possible I would rather have bus fare than lunch.’ Emma gave Samantha a week’s busfare and still insisted at doing lunch with her. She had won herself a friend. She was sure after throwing one or two things at a Samantha she would start singing. A personal assistant is a good source of private information. ***** Meanwhile Pastor Jani had formally announced his intention to remain the Provincial Overseer. The other aspirants were not so pleased with this. Pastor Jani had consulted Pastor Ruvha on the whole issue, including the anonymous letter. Pastor Ruvha was no longer interested in the position but after several meetings with Pastor Jani they made a strategic strike. Pastor Ruvha also announced his interest, making a total of eight contenders. What was fascinating was that Pastor Jani and Pastor Ruvha would announce their interest jointly at the same platforms. The leading contenders appeared to be Pastor Getu, Pastor Makwerera, Dr Faratenda and Pastor Nanchepo, in that order. The entry of Pastor Jani and Pastor Ruvha added another dimension. Rumours started increasing about the aspirants. It was rumoured that others were planning a coalition against Pastor Jani. It was also rumoured that Pastor Ruvha was hoping to win and then step aside for Pastor Jani. None of these rumours were proven. Pastor Getu was actually busy managing his own personal fires. He was a very well-known anointed pastor with the demonstration of power following his ministry. However what was not known was how bad he was at managing his finances. He was in quite some debt. Some of his creditors were his church members who were now embarrassed to persist demanding their money. Unfortunately he had also borrowed heavily from other people and failed to return. He had received two final letters of demands a few weeks back. Debt collectors were clamouring on him. Summons had been issued against him for the recovery of the car he was using, having bought it on credit from an acquaintance’s friend. Two of his children were threatened with expulsion at school for continued non-payment of school fees. Some people had threatened to publicly humiliate him for this. Someone whispered this information to one who whispered it to another. ***** The caller had hidden her identity. Pastor Getu was used to receiving many calls at odd hours. This one came at exactly 6:00am when Pastor Getu was still in bed. ‘Pastor Getu?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Man of God how are you? ‘I am blessed. Who is this?’ ‘I do not want to waste your time. For now I can only introduce myself as a child of God. I believe it’s time to settle all your debts.’ Pastor Getu’s heart thumped. Another creditor! His wife was already stressed by what was happening and she was generally hypertensive. He was not sure how to respond. However the caller did not give him much time to respond. ‘We want to help cover all your debts. All of them. I will call you around lunch time. Meanwhile please calculate and list all your debts and obligations. I am sure we will be able to pay some of the most pressing ones. When I call lunch time please make sure you have all the information ready.’ ‘Oh ok ok,’ the pastor was not sure what to say. ‘I need to know who I am talking to.’ ‘Do not worry man of God,’ the child of God replied. ‘We will definitely meet at some point, very soon. For now let’s work on extinguishing your debt.’ The line went dead. **** Emma was scared. Her heart was literally thumping. She was about to meet Prophet Gareth. The man had seemed larger than life in his home territory, the prophetic Move of God Church. She had arranged an appointment with him. She was not sure how well she was going to conduct the meeting. She was not sure how he was going to respond. She reviewed her notes and nervously waited.
