Part XIX: Having thought this moment through in his mind thousands of times, Alistair was aware that there was only one variable he would be able to control, himself. As a child, his father would repeatedly tell him not to worry about anybody else in situations like this. “The only person you can control is yourself,” he recalled him saying. “The sooner you learn this, the sooner you will find success in this world.” The one thing Alistair’s father didn’t count on was that his son would have such little consideration for others and use his self-confidence for purely personal gain. Caleb couldn’t fight the notion that he had erred in getting his daughter involved. He had not considered that he was putting her in such imminent danger. Mischief was about and he was going to get down to the bottom of it. Barging back into the greenhouse, he could instantly hear the change in sentiment among the worker bees. It was an ominous silence at first, escalating into a ferocious buzzing sound. Having worked hard never to anger the population of bees, this was something he had never experienced firsthand. It is the way of some to rise up in the face of danger and elevate oneself. Not only the willingness, but the ability to do so is a common characteristic among stage performers. Perhaps it is born in the ability to thrive in the face of discomfort. Caleb spotted the open door to one of the hives and made a B-line straight towards it. To be continued…
