Part of the below letter was published in both Northern Courier & Petone Herald. Here is the full unabridged version. Dear Editor, The recent review of fluoridation shows the powerful fluoridation lobby in New Zealand has felt the fluoridation programme had become seriously threatened when, after listening to the evidence, councils were stopping fluoridation or narrowly voting to retain it; The Far North, Central Hawke’s Bay, Taumarunui, New Plymouth, Thames and then Hamilton. Hamilton City Councillors listened to four days of evidence from both sides and voted seven to one to stop fluoridation but were pressured politically to turn it back on. It appears that when Hamilton choose to stop, the fluoridation lobby decided the threat to fluoridation was now too great and have proceeded to throw everything they could at the growing movement to stop fluoridation before it was too late. Prof Gluckman and Skegg’s review is nothing more than a PR exercise to provide ammunition to councils when faced with the facts presented to them by those opposed. When this argument is aired in an open transparent manner, arguments for adding a chemical classified as a hazardous class 7 poison to the drinking water of every man, woman and child with no regard to dose, individual susceptibility, or informed consent, fluoridation becomes exposed as weak, nonsensical and sometimes downright crazy. It is obvious that if Professors Gluckman and Skegg were serious about doing a real review, scientists from both sides would have been part of the panel and it would have been announced to the public at the start. This looks far more like a carefully constructed ambush they had hoped to spring on the NZ public before questions could be asked. Oncologist, Dr Anna Goodwin, who presented at the Hamilton Tribunal last year has written an article about the Fluoridation Review led by Professors Gluckman and Skegg.
