Part of the problem, definitely not part of the solution! And - TopicsExpress

Part of the problem, definitely not part of the solution! And I must say hypocritical of the Inquirer Editorial Board as they chose NOT to endorse in the 1st Congressional District this past cycle choosing instead choosing to sit on the sidelines for the second or third cycle in a row. Their response to my questioning them was they had no time; so from the May primary to the November general they could not squeeze in 30 minutes?? Things that make you go hmmm. My email to the Editorial Board, and Harold Jackson response, is below. From: Jackson, Harold Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 2:01 PM To: Joseph M. McColgan Subject: RE: EDITORIAL BOARD INTERVIEW FOR MEGAN RATH, CANDIDATE FOR U.S. CONGRESS Dear Mr. McColgan, I’m sorry, but our schedule cannot accommodate an interview with the First District candidates, so we are not making an endorsement in that race. From: Joseph M. McColgan Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 1:47 PM To: Jackson, Harold; Ferris, Kevin; Burton, Cynthia; Gohlke, Josh; Rubin, Trudy; Cooke, Russell; Heller, Karen Subject: EDITORIAL BOARD INTERVIEW FOR MEGAN RATH, CANDIDATE FOR U.S. CONGRESS Greetings! I hope this email finds you all well. Megan Rath, running against Congressman Brady in PA-1, informed me you have no intention of interviewing her regarding the Inquirer’s endorsement for the upcoming election. To be honest, I find this both surprising and disappointing. How one can overlook the opportunity to discuss with a young (34), female, moderate republican - who is a pro-choice - her vision for Philadelphia in an endorsement interview – regardless of whether you believe she can win or not against the Philadelphia Democrat party boss – is a travesty not only for the people of the 1st Congressional District, but for the people of Philadelphia as well. Need I remind you that Congressman Brady is part of the problem in Philadelphia, and though you know me and may deem my comment as partisan and biased you cannot disagree that he is. The 1st Congressional District is amongst the poorest and hungriest in the nation articles.philly/2010-01-26/news/25210328_1_hardship-food-research-hunger with an unemployment rate around 15% and yet Megan is not afforded the opportunity to present her credentials and her views? I apologize in advance if I sound a bit arrogant however columnists’ and reporters’ at your paper continually echo the fact that this is a one-party town and when the future of not only the Republican Party but the city as well steps to the plate, and you call her out even before she swings, is mindboggling to say the least. You’ve chosen to interview each and every other local candidate for office this cycle and whether it was just an oversight on your part, or your judgment she has no shot at victory, I do believe the Philadelphia Inquirer owes its readers an opinion in a race where the incumbent is part of the problem, and the challenger part of the solution, regardless of who you ultimately endorse. I see today you’ve endorsed Mr. James over Congressman Fattah. Is this because PA-2 is more important than PA-1, or because Congressman Fattah got his hand caught in the cookie jar and his arrogance finally caught up with him leaving you no other choice? Respectfully, with two days left on your calendar to afford Megan the opportunity to sit with you to discuss her thoughts, give it to her. She has earned it. Thank you in advance and be well. Joe
