Part of the problem we have right now is that we are only thinking as far forward as the next sound byte. Weakening the infrastructure of scientific research in the name of saving a buck will have long-lasting implications on our economic stability as a nation if we fall behind in technological and scientific advances. I hear a lot of complaints (and sometimes joke) about some of the research thats paid for, but some of the most important gains through research isnt the thing being researched, but the act of thinking it through, discovering new methods, new avenues, new connections, and new opportunities that come from things that seem frivolous to outsiders. Edison once said, I havent failed, Ive just found 10,000 ways that wont work. He was one of the most prolific scientists and inventors in history, some are now saying he was on par with Da Vinci. This willingness to try and fail and try again is what made America great, and this experimental nature is what brought us to the democracy we now enjoy.
