Part of what we encourage the kids to do at Make Your Mark is take time for reflection. After each activity we ask them to write in their journals about their experience and what they learned. Today as I make this post, Im in deep reflection upon a day that was emotionally indescribable. If I attempted to describe it, I would use words like joy, great expectation, love, care, leadership, connectedness. Yet Im hard pressed to say any of those words come close to the actual being there experience. Even still, I have some powerful takeaways. First, the definition of a true leader is one who leads in such a way that when they are physically not able to be present, the group of followers continue to lead in the way they were trained. Today that shined through and through. The moment we walked in the door it was like magic. The basketball team and the Make Your Mark kids shaking hands and immediately introducing themselves to each other was beautiful. I could see Coach smiling so big when that happened. Then, Coach Vereen, the coaching staff, and the team allowed us to watch them go through warm ups. Coach Vereen explained their typical routine and then the kids got to go out on the court and do it with the players. After they finished going through warm ups with the players, the kids got to judge the players in a slam dunk contest. The kids absolutely were mesmerized! Once we were done, Len Caesar, a SC High School League official talked to both the team and the Make Your Mark kids about basketball rules. It was very helpful for both groups to hear about some changes in rule policy, as well as, learn general rules that some of the younger ones didnt know about. Before we closed out our time on the court, the Make Your Kids demonstrated their version of the three man weave. The basketball team looked on and cheered as each layup went in. We then moved onto a super delicious lunch provided by Mrs. Diane Gerald. So many thanks go out to her and all of the ladies who helped set up and serve the meal! We are so appreciative! Mrs. Diane spoke to the group (which youll be able to hear in a video I post in the near future highlighting parts of the day) and we shared the meal together. At the end, the basketball team was nice enough to give autographs and take a final picture with us! Thanks to Coach Vereen, the Mullins coaching staff, Principal Michael Stone, Athletic Director Myron Gerald, Mrs. Diane Gerald, all of the ladies who helped set up and serve our meal, and the Mullins Fighting Auctioneers Boys Basketball Team for an absolutely unforgettable day! Our kids had been bragging all week that they were going to get to go to Mullins. Now they want to know when they can go back? :) Check out all the pictures from today. Ill be posting a video to go along with todays events a little later! #Running
