Partakers of the Divine Nature 2 Peter 1:1-4 The grace of God that saves the believer is the same grace that instructs and enables him to become more like his blessed Lord with each passing day (Titus 2:11-13; Gal.4:19). Todays text explains the process whereby we can mature spiritually and become partakers of the divine nature (v.4) and, thereby, become all God intends us to be in Christ. First, we must possess like precious faith (v.1)-apostle Peter was saved the same way as you and me. This precious faith is obtained (v.1) at the new birth; it is the faith that procures for the hell-bound sinner the righteousness of God the moment he trusts the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior (Rom.3:21-22; 2 Cor.5:21). We must be absolutely certain that we are saved, for no one can become like Jesus Christ unless he is first in Christ (1 Cor.12:13; Jn.17:21). Second, we must avail ourselves of the knowledge of God (v.2). We cannot neglect the Word and, at the same time, grow in grace (3:18). It is necessary to know what the Bible says we ought to be and then, in turn, understand how our heavenly Father intends to bring that to pass. In both instances, God provides all we need (v.3). What is the standard for which we are to strive? It is Jesus Christ Himself, who gloriously exemplifies the pattern of perfection. How do we become partakers of this divine nature? By these, that is, by the great and precious promises (v.4). When we, by faith, daily claim these promises at the throne of grace, the way is opened for the Lords power to make His promises a reality in our own hearts and lives. Believe the promises, appropriate them in prayer, and allow Gods Spirit to work them out. DWC
