Particle Fever Here is an absolutely stellar film that delves into the wonders of CERN and the recent discoveries surrounding the Higgs Boson. The film is about an hour and half long, and it will educate you on just what physicists are trying to prove: nothing less than the basic parameters of the universe. Now, as Buddhists, we could already tell them that form is emptiness and emptiness is form, but just watch how they approach that conclusion with the standard model and the cosmological constant and super-symmetry, etc. It is really thrilling to watch. Not often do I feel enthusiastic for the future of our species, but these geeks give me hope. Imagine thousands of people from around the world working collaboratively to build a Swiss watch five stories high and 17 miles in circumference. Then they propel protons at the speed of light through magnets cooled below the temperature of outer space. They generate these beams in opposite directions, and then make them collide in a beam one thousandth the width of an atoms nucleus. Damn! Attached here is a small clip from the movie taken at the moment of the first collision. The movie directors got it just right; they brought in Beethovens Ode to Joy in the soundtrack. As I watched it, I thought of Galileo and Newton, and Einstein, and all the rest who have got us to this point despite the endless wars and constant prejudice. If we could just get the other seven billion humans to stop fighting over their superstitions and their oil deposits, imagine what we might learn and build? If you like this clip, the full movie is available on YouTube and Netflix: https://youtube/watch?v=V3_SJDLCetU
