Parties involved in conflict resolution (and negotiation more generally) tend to distrust and downplay the merit of offers from the other side simply because they come from an “opponent.” It is a gut reaction and one of the things mediators must address early in the process. One way to sidestep that type of reaction is to go through an analysis of what your real interests are compared to what position you have taken. This is not easy to do by yourself. A mediator or other neutral can help you see out of your position and into your needs.
