Parts of the Tenderloin are starting to look like Skid Row in Los Angeles. Its so wrong and unacceptable in a city with so much wealth. Were doing a show about solutions to this crisis soon. [In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, San Francisco homeless people and homeless advocates are participating in civil disobedience in support of the Right to Rest Act (Right2Rest) and the civil and human rights of homeless people. From 5:00 pm on January 18 until 5:00 am on January 19, homeless people and advocates for the homeless will gather at the corner of Powell Street and Market Street, on the sidewalk near the Cable Car Turnaround, for an all-night sleep out and action, featuring food, music, a film screening, and speakers, in support of the Right2Rest. As poverty and homelessness affect more and more people in our communities, we have seen a trend across California and the rest of the nation: cities are responding to homelessness through laws that criminalize innocent behavior in public places -- sitting, sleeping, lying down, and sharing food. Right2Rest legislation is intended to protect homeless people from being harrassed, cited, or arrested for resting and sharing food in public spaces. Anyone who is interested in supporting the civil and human rights of homeless people is welcome to attend the event. Participants can stay for the entire event or can come for a shorter period of time.]
