Pasco County Florida superintendent wants to eliminate honors for valedictorian and salutatorian. He proposes that honors of magna cum laude and summa cum laude and cum laude be used instead. I think it is great if he wants to honor those who rise to cum laude status; but, I think it is total crap to eliminate the vals and sals. Yes, we should honor those who do their best, but we should also recognize the best of the best because they worked just a little bit harder, and should be recognized for it. If you take away this incentive, what is there to work for? Anyone who could achieve valedictorian will easily meet requirements for magna cum laude, so, why would they put in the extra effort to be the best of the best, if no one is allowed to recognize it? Our education system has never been that great, but it has been going down hill since No Child Left Behind. Americans what happened to your competitive spirit? While theyre at it, they might as well get rid of state championships for highschool athletes and science fairs and debate team, etc. Everyone has something they are good at and if intelligence and academic discipline is where they shine, then let that be recognized! ,We have no problem supporting our MVPs. So, lets keep supporting our Vals and Sals too. So, even if they take away your title, I say great job kids, keep up the good work! Those of us with any sense are very, very proud of you!
