Passage: Ecclesiastes 5 & 6 Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income……. Ecclesiastes 5:10 Money can never satisfy. There is good news and bad news about wealth, says the teacher, but far more bad news than good. He says that wealth can produce greed, which is insatiable. The rich lose sleep over worrying about their wealth, their investments, and the people who depend on them for a living. This is a legitimate concern, the teacher acknowledges; the rich can instantly lose everything they have accumulated because of a single decision or unfortunate timing. The poor worker, on the other hand, enjoys a sweet and restful sleep from the day’s hard labor. The ultimate bad news about wealth is that rich people – like all others – die poor. They cannot take anything from their labor. The good news is that wealth – like food and work – is a gift from God. Those who enjoy it as such will not brood over the days of their lives, because these people take pleasure in doing what God has given them to do and they show their gratitude to God for the gifts He has given them. I must be contented with what God has given me, and be thankful for His blessings of life, provision, and protection.
