Passing this along to help our neighboring Department reach their goal..... March 29, 2014 Dear Fellow Firefighters, The Sparta Center Volunteer Fire Department is happy to announce its newest Junior Firefighter Timothy Murphy. Timothy is the grandson of the late Robert Hartzell and has several family and friends with our Department. Timothy has grown up around the fire department and has been involved with several of our events. He has always shown an interest in becoming a firefighter someday. Timothy was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the #1 genetic disease in the U.S. CF causes thick sticky mucus build up in the body and lungs. This mucus build-up is a haven for germs, causing chronic infection in the lungs. The mucus also obstructs the pancreas preventing the body’s natural enzymes from reaching the intestines to digest food, thereby not allowing the body to absorb the fats and nutrients needed to stay healthy and grow. In order to stay healthy Timothy’s day consists of taking enzymes to aid digestion of food, aerosols and a chest vest to open his airways, vitamins and antibiotics to help improve his general health. Some CF patients also are hospitalized due to infection in their lungs. Nutrition and exercise play a vital component in his daily routine maintaining a special diet to ensure adequate calorie intake to keep him healthy. Timothy knows that becoming a firefighter is going to be a challenge at times with his health but is willing to face that challenge while helping to keep his community safe. Each year Timothy participates in the annual Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis with his family raising money for CF research. This year the Sparta Center Volunteer Fire Dept. will be having a Basket raffle on May 17 during the Dansville Dogwood Festival to help Timothy raise money for his team and CF research. We are asking if each Fire Department would donate a basket towards our raffle. All Baskets need to be delivered to the Sparta Center fire hall (Saturday around noon) or picked up by Saturday May 10th. Please contact Bobbi Coburn (585-322-5715) or Sondra Murphy (585-245-1930) if you have any questions or need a basket picked up. Thank you for all your help and support!
