Passionate about toilets! Over the past few years, Mary and Cat have become increasingly passionate about toilets! Open defecation is a huge widespread problem in our state of Odisha and leads to spread of many preventable diseases. It is also a safety issue for the girls, heading to the outdoors at night-time can make them a target for rape attacks. To tackle the problem of lack of toilets in Indian communities is a complex problem, not just from a financial point of view but from cultural and caste views preventing a community from accepting sanitation solutions. It takes a long time, needs to be community driven and we recognise the need to bring in experts to see sustainable changes for communities. We currently have Charlotte from the UK with us on an internship… complete with a Masters in water and sanitation she is proving invaluable as she makes links with local charities in our area who are expert in this field. We are excited to see the interest growing as she talks with various village leaders, the communities and the sanitation charities and we look forward to seeing the villages we work alongside finally being able to have their own toilets in their communities in the future.
