Newly elected Sheriff Jay Varney and outgoing Sheriff John Anderson together gave a command performance outside the Madera County Sheriffs Office during the departments first ever Change of Command ceremony. The ceremonial ritual from one outgoing commanding officer to an incoming one, ensures to them that that they are never without leadership. Sheriff Jay Varney and retired Sheriff John Anderson spent a decade working together for the betterment of Madera County. They have always considered each other both a friend and an ally. Today, for the first time in the history of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, citizens witnessed the two comrades demonstrate their allegiance to not only the department but the citizens of Madera County. During today’s ceremony, Madera County Sheriff’s Deputies lowered the American flag, which was presented to Sheriff John Anderson. World War II Marine Corps veteran Harrison Dedmond presented Sheriff Jay Varney with a flag that was raised during the ceremony, to mark the official transfer of leadership or “Change of Command.”
